Effect of feeding chia
to lactating goats
The data
for this goat trial were provided by Donald C. Beitz,
distinguished professor, Jon P. Schoonmaker,
post-doctoral research associate, and Sara S. Linn, undergraduate student.
The trial was done in the Department of Animal Science at Iowa State University
.
The chia (Salivia hispanica L)
was provided by Arizona Chia Inc. of Sonoita,
AZ.

Goats were fed corn-based grain diets supplemented with 2
ounces of chia daily from February 11, 2007 to March 11, 2007. After removing
chia from the diet, corn-based grain diets continued to be fed until goats were
placed on pasture in April.
Summary of Findings
- Short-chain
and long-chain fatty acids increased, whereas medium-chain fatty acids
decreased during chia supplementation.
- Mono-
and poly-unsaturated fatty acids increased, whereas saturated fatty acids
decreased during chia supplementation.
- The atherogenic index decreased with chia supplementation.
- The
cis-9, trans-11 isomer of CLA and its precursor (trans-11 18:1) were
increased due to chia supplementation
- All
changes, except the increase in poly-unsaturated fatty acids and the increase
in cis-9, trans-11 CLA, were maintained after the trial had finished. It
is unclear if this is a carryover effect, or an effect due to goats being
placed on pasture.

as follows:

This trial supports other research findings in which chia
has produced animal products with not only a better balanced fatty acid profile,
but additionally a product which is lower in saturated fatty acids and higher
in polyunsaturated fatty acids, in particular omega-3 fatty acid. The results also show that the chia
essentially brought about changes in composition which take place when animals
are pastured.
